The final phase focuses on the development of historically grounded 3D urban representations of selected areas of Istanbul. These models are generated based on historical maps and archival sources and integrated with the textual and semantic data produced in earlier phases. The result is an interconnected digital environment linking texts, space, and urban form.
In this phase, text mining and natural language processing methods are applied to the transliterated corpus. Named entities such as places, events, and actors are identified and analyzed to reveal patterns related to urban life and spatial change in late Ottoman Istanbul. The extracted data is structured for spatial and semantic linking.
The collected Ottoman Turkish newspapers are being processed using Transkribus. This phase involves the automated transcription and transliteration of printed Ottoman texts, followed by manual correction and quality control. The resulting machine-readable texts form the basis for subsequent computational analysis.
During the first phase, a corpus of late Ottoman newspapers related to Istanbul was identified and systematically collected. The focus was placed on newspapers containing references to everyday urban life, spatial practices, and events at the neighborhood and street level. This phase established the primary textual foundation of the project.
